About This Call

Freedom: Art as the Messenger is an exhibition at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C., running from April 11 to June 14, 2019. Submissions will be considered through a blind jurying process and evaluated on aesthetic value, mastery of craft, and relevance to the exhibition theme. All media are eligible, including drawing, fiber, installation, mixed media, painting, photography, video, digital arts, printmaking, sculpture, and other categories.

Artists may submit up to 8 pieces (6 for audio/video) with a $32.00 submission fee. Work samples must include high-resolution .jpg images (at least 1200 pixels wide and 300 dpi). Video files must be 1920 x 1080 resolution in .mp4 or .mov format. Artists must provide a statement of 530 characters or less and may include a brief description of each piece up to 260 characters. All artwork must be matted, framed, and exhibition-ready with proper hanging hardware (3/4-inch d-rings or larger, or screw eyes with 1/4-inch diameter opening or larger). All works must be for sale at fair market value. The Cato Institute will receive a 30 percent commission on all artwork sold, with artists receiving 70 percent of the retail price within 30 days of the exhibition close.

Accepted artists must deliver work by March 27, 2019. Notification of acceptance is February 1, 2019, with completed contracts due by February 15, 2019. The opening reception is April 11, 2019 at 6:30 p.m., where cash prizes will be awarded for Best in Show, Second Place, and Third Place, with honorable mentions also recognized. Required artwork pickup is June 14, 4:00–6:00 p.m. or June 15, 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Artists are responsible for all shipping, insurance, and delivery costs.
