About This Call
Farhang Foundation is seeking professional artists to submit proposals for a major public urban art opportunity in Los Angeles, California. This innovative project has been inspired by the 2500-year-old Cyrus Cylinder, which visited the Getty Museum in Los Angeles in 2013. The Cylinder narrates the historic role of Cyrus the Great of Persia as a world leader for peace and freedom, and has become the most influential declaration of religious freedom and political multiculturalism from the ancient world.
The Foundation is looking for artists from all cultural and political backgrounds with experience working in the public sector to create a site-specific artwork that commemorates the concepts of religious diversity and freedom as human rights, inspired by the ideals of Cyrus the Great. The artwork will be gifted to the city of Los Angeles on behalf of the Iranian American community. The installation site is located on a median strip in west Los Angeles, with maximum dimensions of 15' H by 12' W by 20' L. The estimated budget for design, fabrication, and installation is not to exceed $300,000.
Submissions for Phase II must include up to 8 sketches and visuals, plus a brief typed narrative explaining the proposal, medium, size, specifics of the artwork, and expressed interest in and understanding of the project. All submissions must be submitted virtually through CallForEntry.org. Incomplete and late submissions will not be accepted. Submissions will be evaluated on artistic merit, expressed interest in and understanding of the project, and the artwork's compliance with the theme and goals. The deadline for Phase II submissions is October 27, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Finalists (5-7) will be invited to submit full proposals in Phase Three, with a winner announcement projected for March 21, 2015, and installation in September 2015.
