About This Call

Black Box Gallery announces a juried group photography exhibition on shadow and light. The exhibition explores how photographers interpret shadow and light across contemporary work, including dramatic shadows and patterns in black and white imagery and ethereal, moody shadows and textures in color photography.

Juror Todd Johnson is the founder and director of Black Box Gallery, with an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has served as a portfolio reviewer for Photolucida, Critical Mass, Dodho Magazine, and Blue Sky Gallery, and has worked as an independent curator for exhibitions at institutions including Linfield College, Gallery Homeland, The Waiting Room Gallery, and others. Johnson has 25 years of experience in arts education and administration, with exhibitions nationally and in the Portland area.

The exhibition will feature 24 photographs selected by the juror for display at the gallery (September 1-25, 2024), with an additional 30 photographs selected for the online gallery annex. All 54 photographs will be included in a catalog available for purchase on Blurb Books. Black Box Gallery provides free printing, matting, and framing for all exhibitions using archival inkjet printing on Epson Premium Luster Photo paper. Selected photographers must provide high-resolution TIFF or JPEG files. Exhibition prints are retained in flat files after the show for future promotion and sales. Black Box Gallery takes a 50% commission on sales, with 50% going to the photographer. All rights remain with the photographer, and no sale or printing occurs without prior consent. Entry fee is $40. Photographers may submit 1-5 images. Open to all photographers internationally.
