About This Call

Black Box Gallery is hosting a juried group photography exhibition on contemporary portraiture. The exhibition explores diverse approaches to portrait photography including pose and gesture, image and identity, documentary and street, travel, constructed narrative, self-portrait, environmental, vernacular and snapshot, family narrative, fashion and nude photography.

Juror Todd Johnson is the founder and director of Black Box Gallery. He holds an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and has served as a portfolio reviewer for Photolucida and juror for The Drawers Program at Blue Sky Gallery. Johnson has worked as an independent photography curator and college photography instructor for 15 years in Portland. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Submissions must include 1-5 images. Entry fee is $35.00. Up to 5 applications are allowed per artist. The juror will select 24 photographs for exhibition at the gallery and an additional 30 photographs for the online gallery annex. All 54 photographs will be included in a catalog available for purchase on Blurb Books. Exhibition dates are November 1-20, 2019, with an opening reception on Friday, November 1, 6-8:00 pm.

Black Box Gallery provides free printing, matting, and framing for all selected work. Prints are produced on an Epson Stylus Pro archival inkjet printer on Epson Premium Luster Photo paper in a color-calibrated environment. Selected photographers must provide high-resolution TIFF or JPEG files. Exhibition prints will be kept in the gallery's flat file after the show for future promotion and sale. Black Box Gallery takes a 50% commission on all sales, with 50% going to the photographer. All rights remain with the photographer, and no sale or printing of files will occur without prior consent. Artists may request that their print not be for sale and be used for exhibition and promotion only.
