About This Call
The Brighton Cultural Arts Commission is requesting proposals from professional artists to design and install a mural in Founder's Plaza, located in downtown Brighton on Bridge Street between 1st Avenue and Main Street. The mural will be placed on the north wall of the Wells Fargo Bank Building on the south side of the plaza. The wall is 750 square feet in size, with the mural measuring up to 50 feet wide by 15 feet high, with the option to extend beyond these dimensions.
The theme of the mural should depict the history of Brighton, showing both the past and present. Brighton began as a railroad town and developed into a farming community, with the Kuner vegetable processing and packaging factory being one of the main industries. The city continues as a vegetable farming area and is now a renewable energy corridor with wind energy manufacturing and a newly acquired lithium battery manufacturer. The mural concept should reflect this evolution in a unique way.
Initial submissions are due by midnight April 14, 2023, and should include artist qualifications, prior murals completed, costs for those murals, and a concept for the Founder's Plaza mural in the form of a letter explaining the artist's understanding of the project. Submit work samples (5-8 images) and materials to [email protected]. The Brighton Cultural Arts Commission will select 5 to 7 proposals for further consideration. Selected artists will be invited to an interview scheduled for the week of May 22, 2023, where they will present a detailed mock-up of the suggested mural, including materials and costs. A stipend will be provided for this work. The mural must be completed by December 31, 2023. The project budget is $70,000–$80,000.
