About This Call
Fort Lewis College is seeking artists for a public art commission for the reconstruction of Berndt Hall, which will house the Biology Department. This project is part of the Colorado Art in Public Places Program and offers two distinct opportunities: interior art glass ($45,000) and exterior sculpture ($65,000). All related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, and documentation are covered within these budgets.
The interior art glass project involves two glass walls in the main entrance and lobby area—one measuring 14 feet long by 11 feet high, and a second approximately 210 square feet between the lobby and study room. The artwork should bring color and inspiration of biology into these spaces while being highly accessible to students. The exterior sculpture opportunity includes two locations: a plaza area outside the main entrance extending into the campus quad, and a 30-foot-high stucco wall on the existing Chemistry Building facing Berndt Hall. Exterior artwork may include relief in various materials, mosaics, or murals.
Eligibility is restricted to artists living in the Four Corners area: Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, or Utah. Artists with current grants from the State or existing public art contracts with the Colorado Council on the Arts that are less than 50% complete are not eligible. The artwork should enhance the natural environment of the Four Corners area and the architecture of Fort Lewis College, reflect aspects of biology and nature, and create an identity for the biology department. Submission deadline is April 20, 2009 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Six images are required for submission.
