Forms of Devotion

Forms of Devotion invites artists to consider how devotion is a part of their art practice, exploring the question: Are there similarities in devotional rituals and forms across different subjects and fields?

Co-curators Joan Roberts Garcia and Karen Hymer have conceived this exhibition. Joan Roberts Garcia's artist statement describes the genesis of the idea, beginning with her piece "Pierros Eyes," inspired by Pierro della Francesca's frescoes in Arezzo, Italy. Over 8 years, she developed a practice of carefully drawing eyes from the paintings, eventually presenting them in a Tibetan Thangka format—a sacred Buddhist frame that both protects and honors. This exploration led her to consider devotion across artistic traditions and centuries, from Renaissance painting to Buddhist sacred art.

Eligibility and Requirements: All artists must live in New Mexico or Arizona. All entries must be handmade by the artist and produced within the last 7 years. 3D and experimental work is encouraged. All media are acceptable except AI-generated images. Work must arrive at the gallery ready to hang; framing is not required, but magnets, clips, and other display methods may be used. Artists are responsible for delivering and picking up their work and paying all shipping fees. Entry fee: $35 for three images, $5 for each additional image. Artists may enter up to 10 artworks and must submit a minimum of 3 images. If accepted, artists will be asked to provide a brief statement to display with their work. Curators will select two accepted artists to exhibit at Light Art Space in 2027. Sales are encouraged but not required; Light Art Space will retain a 50% commission on any artwork sold. Exhibition dates: March 5–28, 2026. Opening reception: March 6, 5:00–7:00 pm. Work is due at Light Art Space by February 25, 2026. Notification of acceptance will be sent via email on February 12, 2026.
