About This Call

FORECAST//RECAST is SDA's 2022 Juried Member Exhibition, open to all Surface Design Association members working in all media. The exhibition will be on view from December 3, 2022 through January 27, 2023 at the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg, OR. The juror is Tanya Aguiñiga. The exhibition will celebrate works that push the evolution of textiles through the use of color, design, processes, and meanings, highlighting fiber and textile-based materials and techniques, cross-disciplinary practices, experimental processes, and material innovation.

FORECAST//RECAST will bring together artists and artworks that explore ideas of predicting, reshaping, and re-predicting—works that offer a glimpse of possible futures, reexamine historical narratives, shed light on needed social and ecological interventions, and bend inquiry towards new aims to reframe the way we view the world. Works chosen will demonstrate unique, well-developed artistic vision and innovation.

Entry deadline is September 15, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Entry fees are $40 for SDA members and $20 for SDA student-members. Up to two artworks may be submitted per artist (2D, 3D, or video). Four images total may be submitted per entrant, with file format JPEG only, minimum 1200 pixels on the shortest side, 72 ppi/dpi resolution, and 5 MB maximum file size. Video submissions must not exceed 100 MB per sample. A brief artist statement (1,000 characters maximum) is required; do not include identifying information as this is a blind jurying process. Entries must be original work completed after January 1, 2020. Work executed under classroom or educational guidance is not eligible. Works previously exhibited with SDA will not be considered.

Awards include First Place ($500), Second Place ($300), Third Place ($150), and SDA Award of Excellence. Selected artwork must arrive at the venue between November 18-28, 2022. Artists are responsible for shipping costs including insurance in transit. Work is insured once in the possession of Chehalem Cultural Center at 50% of retail value. A 40% gallery commission will be charged for sold work. For questions, contact [email protected].
