Focus: Shadow and Light

Theme: Shadow and Light. Photography is the recording of patterns of darkness and light. Shadows enhance the relationships of subjects in an image, they give definition and dimension, which complements the quality of the light values. Photographers have used dramatic shadows and patterns in black and white images and have also explored using ethereal and moody shadows and textures in color photography. This exhibition seeks a range of how shadow and light are interpreted by contemporary photographers.

Juror: Todd Johnson, founder and director of Black Box Gallery. Todd received his MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and has been a photography portfolio reviewer for Photolucida (PDX OR), Critical Mass (PDX OR), Dodho Magazine (Barcelona, Spain) and Blue Sky Gallery (PDX OR). He has worked as an independent curator for exhibitions at multiple venues and has worked in arts education and arts administration for 25 years.

Entry Deadline: August 12, 2022. Exhibition Dates: September 1-20, 2022. Each exhibition will have 24 photographs selected by the juror for exhibition at the gallery. An additional 30 photographs will be selected by the juror for exhibition in the online gallery annex. All 54 photographs from the show will be included in a catalog available for purchase on Blurb Books. Entry fee: $40.00. Up to 5 images may be submitted (minimum 1). Open to all photographers internationally.

Black Box Gallery will provide free printing, matting, and framing for all selected exhibitions. Photographers selected into the exhibition will provide a high resolution TIFF or JPEG file for the gallery to print. Prints are 12" x 18", 12" x 12", or 12" x 16" on Epson Premium Luster Photo paper using archival ink jet printing. All exhibition prints will be kept in a flat file after the show for future sale and promotion. Black Box Gallery takes a 50% commission on all sales; 50% goes to the photographer. All rights remain with the photographer, and no sale or printing will happen without prior consent and agreement. If the artist prefers, the print does not have to be for sale and will be for exhibition and promotion only.
