About This Call
Focus: Shadow and Light is a photography exhibition exploring how shadow and light are interpreted by contemporary photographers. The theme emphasizes how shadows enhance relationships of subjects in images, giving definition and dimension that complements light values. Photographers are encouraged to submit work exploring dramatic shadows and patterns in black and white images as well as ethereal and moody shadows and textures in color photography.
The juror is Todd Johnson, founder and director of Black Box Gallery, who holds an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. Johnson has extensive experience as a photography portfolio reviewer, curator, and instructor with 15 years of teaching experience in Portland. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
The exhibition runs March 1-20, 2020, with an opening reception on Friday, March 6, 6-8:00 pm. Twenty-four photographs will be selected for exhibition at the gallery, and an additional 30 photographs will be selected for the online gallery annex. All 54 photographs will be included in a catalog available for purchase on Blurb Books. Black Box Gallery provides free printing, matting, and framing for all selected work. Prints are kept in a flat file after the show for future promotion and sale. The gallery takes a 50% commission on all sales, with 50% going to the photographer. Artists may request that their print not be for sale and be used for exhibition and promotion only. All rights remain with the photographer, and no sale or printing will occur without prior consent. Entry fee is $35.00. Submit 1-5 images (minimum 1, maximum 5). Application deadline is February 11, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. MST. International eligibility.
