Focus: Shadow and Light

Black Box Gallery is excited to announce a juried group photo show on shadow and light. Photography is the documentation of patterns of darkness and light. Shadows enhance the relationships of subjects in an image, they give definition and dimension, which complements the quality of the light values. Photographers have used dramatic shadows and patterns in black and white images and have also explored using ethereal and moody shadows and textures in color photography. We will be looking for a range of how shadow and light are interpreted by contemporary photographers.

The exhibition will run January 1-25, 2026, with 26 photographs selected by juror Todd Johnson for exhibition at the gallery. An additional 50 photographs will be selected for exhibition in the online gallery annex. All 76 photographs from the show will be included in a catalog available for purchase on Blurb Books. Entry fee is $40.00, with a maximum of 5 applications allowed per photographer and 1-5 images required per submission.

Black Box Gallery provides free printing, matting and framing for all exhibitions using 18" x 24" black frames with white mats for 12" x 18", 12" x 12" and 12" x 16" prints. Selected photographers will provide high resolution TIFF or JPEG files for gallery printing on Epson Premium Luster Photo paper. The gallery takes a 50% commission on sales, with all rights remaining with the photographer. Exhibition prints will be kept in flat files for future promotion for 5 years.
