About This Call

Established in 1988, the Arts at the Airport Foundation showcases Tennessee's cultural heritage and creative talents through rotating public art exhibitions at Nashville International Airport. The Flying Solo Exhibition Series, developed in 1996, provides a highly visible venue for Tennessee artists and offers visitors a taste of the region's art and craft culture.

The exhibition series features several spaces accommodating both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork. Art Cases include three spaces in Concourse A (15 ft. w x 5 ft. high x 1 ft. deep each), one space in Concourse D (10 ft. wide x 7 ft. high x 21 inches deep), and one glass case in the Level 1 Waiting Area (12 ft. wide x 7 ft. 5 inches high x 4 ft. deep). Art Exhibit Walls include a curved wall in the A/B Waiting Area (35 ft. wide x 12 ft. high), two walls in Concourse D (10 ft. wide x 7 ft. high each), and four spaces in the Level 1 Waiting Area (30 ft. wide x 6 ft. high each, available after September 2023). Each exhibit runs for four months. Artwork must be framed and ready to display, with two-dimensional work profiles less than 4 inches including frame and molding. Artists are responsible for delivering and picking up artwork from the airport.

An honorarium ranging from $750 to $1,500 is awarded to exhibiting artists. Individual artists, arts-related community groups, and schools are eligible to apply. Applicants must be Tennessee residents or demonstrate a strong connection to Tennessee through prior residency or their artwork. Submissions must include 7 digital images of representative work, a brief artist statement about the proposed exhibit, a short bio (1-2 paragraphs), and a résumé or curriculum vitae (not to exceed 2 pages). Selection criteria include professional qualifications, proven experience with similar installations, and artistic merit. The selection committee comprises members from the Arts at the Airport Board of Directors and the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority's Community Affairs division.
