About This Call

The Arts at the Airport Foundation, established in 1988, showcases Tennessee's cultural heritage and creative talents through rotating public art exhibitions at Nashville International Airport. The Flying Solo Exhibition Series, developed in 1996 and supported by the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, provides a highly visible venue for Tennessee artists. Each exhibition runs for four months. Artwork must be framed and ready to display. Artists are responsible for delivering and picking up artwork from BNA. An honorarium ranging from $750 to $1,500 is awarded to exhibiting artists. Individual artists, arts-related community groups, and schools are eligible to apply.

The airport features multiple exhibition spaces accommodating both two-dimensional and three-dimensional work. Three-dimensional artwork can be displayed in art cases located in Concourse A (3 cases, 15 ft. w x 5 ft. high x 1 ft. deep each) or Concourse D (1 case, 10 ft. wide x 7 ft. high x 21 inches deep). Two-dimensional artwork can be exhibited on art walls in the A/B Waiting Area (curved wall, 35 ft. wide x 12 ft. high), Concourse D (2 walls, 10 ft. wide x 7 ft. high each), or Level 1 Waiting Area (up to 4 spaces, 30 ft. wide x 6 ft. high each). Framed artwork must have a profile less than 4 inches including frame and molding.

Applications must include 7 digital images of representative work, a brief artist statement about the proposed exhibit, a short bio (1-2 paragraphs), a résumé or curriculum vitae (not to exceed 2 pages), and responses to short answer questions including a description of your connection to Tennessee. Selection criteria include professional qualifications, proven experience with similar installations, and artistic merit. Eligibility is limited to Tennessee residents or artists who can demonstrate a strong connection to Tennessee through prior residency or their artwork. The deadline for proposals is May 12, 2024 at 12 Midnight Mountain Standard Time / 1:00 a.m. Central Standard Time.
