About This Call
Flux Projects produces temporary public art for Atlanta's cultural community. Flux Night is a one-night event modeled on international celebrations such as Paris's Nuit Blanche. The event fills the streets and empty spaces of the Castleberry Hill Arts District with visual art projects, performances, dance, music, sound and light installations, and multimedia works. Flux Night 2013 will take place on Saturday, October 5, from 7:00 p.m. until midnight, curated by Helena Reckitt with the theme "Free Association." The event explores random encounters, chance discoveries, and sensory overload, building on unexpected juxtapositions and patterns of call-and-response. Free Association examines how images, information and identities proliferate and mutate, online and off, pointing to the strong history of digital art and collective activity within the city.
Flux Night 2013 will have two categories of projects: curated projects selected directly by Reckitt and proposed projects selected from this call by a committee including Reckitt, Flux Projects staff and board. Any artist, artist team, or creative collaborative may submit projects; individual applicants or at least one team member must be 18 years of age. Proposed projects can focus on any form of visual art or performance, broadly conceived, including sound installations. Projects should be artistically compelling both aesthetically and conceptually, creative in their approach to public space and human interaction, and address a broad audience. Projects should run continuously throughout the evening when possible and accommodate a crowd of 15,000 people. Flux Projects will make final site selection and secure permission; applicants familiar with Castleberry Hill may note a preferred site but this is not required.
Flux Projects will award commissions from $500 to $5,000 based on project quality and viability. The budget is all-inclusive, covering design, materials, construction, transportation, delivery, site preparation, lighting, equipment, insurance, consultant fees, installation and de-installation, travel, and artist fees. Flux Projects carries liability insurance for the evening but does not cover performers, equipment, or artist materials. Selection criteria include artistic merit, accessibility to a public audience, appropriateness for the event, feasibility of construction, and public safety. Submissions close March 22, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. MDT; notification is May 1, 2013. Applicants may submit up to 2 applications with work samples including up to 6 images, 2 audio files, and 2 video files (minimum 1 total sample required).
