About This Call
The City of Sunrise, Florida is seeking to commission an Artist or Artist team to create one or possibly two iconic sculptures to be located at the Flamingo Linear Park at two locations: Flamingo Road and Panther Parkway, and Flamingo Road and Oakland Park Boulevard. The sculptures should reflect the spirit of Sunrise and be impactful to passerby vehicular traffic both day and night on this high-traffic roadway.
The call will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, up to three Artists or Artist teams per sculpture will be shortlisted by the Selection Committee based on experience, credentials, style, and previous work. In the second phase, each shortlisted Artist or Artist team will receive up to $1,500 stipend for development of a detailed proposal with conceptual design options. The selected Artist or Artist team will enter into an agreement with the City for one or both sculptures in an amount not to exceed $150,000 per sculpture. The budget includes all costs: research, community and agency meetings, design, materials, permitting, fabrication, installation, photography, insurance, proposals, travel, sales taxes, lighting design and installation, labor, structural engineering, and transportation. The Artist will be responsible for creation, permitting, and installation of the final work. The concrete art pads have already been completed by the City and include conduit and wire to electrical panel, pull boxes, and empty conduit to the center of the pad.
The call is open to all professional Artists nationwide with experience working with public agencies and professional engineers. Sculptures must be durable and require minimal ongoing maintenance, designed and constructed in accordance with the Florida Building Code and City of Sunrise Code. Sculptures must be self-supporting, large in scale with a minimum of 16 feet to a maximum of 22 feet in height, with vertical orientation. The City prefers sculptures with uniqueness, significant height for visibility on a busy corner, vibrant colors that stand out against an open and green backdrop, visibility day and night (preferably lit from within), no water features, and non-interactive design. Location 1 (Oakland Park Boulevard and Sawgrass Expressway): 12-foot diameter pad, 15,000 lbs max self-weight capacity, 85 k-ft max overturning moment. Location 2 (Oakland Park Boulevard and Panther Parkway): 16-foot diameter pad, 28,000 lbs max self-weight capacity, 200 k-ft max overturning moment. Both pads have 2-foot thickness, 3,000 psi minimum concrete compressive strength, and 3,000 psf soil bearing pressure.
