About This Call

The City of Grand Junction's 1% for the Arts Program is seeking an artist to create a metal artwork for Fire Station 7, located at 2351 H Road in Appleton. The artwork should encompass historical markers of the land and neighborhood, which may include the Interurban Electric Railway that carried passengers between Fruita and Grand Junction, Appleton Elementary, apple orchards, irrigation canals, and a modern fire engine. All components are not required; these are guiding elements for the finished product. The Grand Junction Fire Department seeks artwork with meaning to both the department and community, with design and aesthetics similar to previous Fire Station projects.

The artwork must be made of metal and painted with "Classic Bronze" to complement the existing dark brown metal fascia. The artwork may not exceed 2400 lbs. including anchors, with anchors at least 4' apart. If the artwork exceeds this weight, the artist must hire a licensed structural engineer to verify wall strength or provide reinforcement. The design, installation, and materials must be durable, powder coated, require minimal maintenance, not create hazards, and be resistant to theft, vandalism, and weathering. The artist is responsible for designing, fabricating, and installing the artwork in close collaboration with the City project engineer. Installation is required by Summer 2025.

Eligibility is open to all artists residing in Colorado. Submissions must include a letter of interest (not to exceed 1 page), resume (not to exceed 2 pages), proposal (2 pages including budget), design sketch(es), and 3-5 images of original representative work in .JPG or .JPEG format. The selection committee will review submissions and select finalists by the end of February. Finalists may be interviewed online prior to final selection. Selection will be based on quality, timelessness, permanence, compatibility with the site, relation to theme, and budget. The deadline for receipt of submissions is Friday, February 7, 2025, by 11:59 p.m. MST.
