About This Call

The City of Bothell, Washington is seeking a qualified artist or artist team to develop site-specific artwork for Fire Station #42, located at 10726 Beardslee Blvd in downtown Bothell. The station is situated on a bustling street linking Bothell's Main Street and UW Bothell/Cascadia College campuses. The design team has determined that preference will be given to artwork located on the exterior of the property and viewable by passersby. The budget available for this project is a minimum of $100,000 and includes design, materials and fabrication, installation support, taxes, travel and insurance.

The art committee welcomes an innovative approach to artwork that may be reflective of the Fire Department's mission and vision, engage the community, connect to significant areas such as UW Bothell/Cascadia College, incorporate light, or signify when a fire or medic response is occurring. The artist will work collaboratively with the City's project manager and Design-Builder (BNBuilders and Miller Hull Architects) in development of plans and specifications, schedule and installation. Fabrication and installation must be complete by substantial completion of the building, anticipated for Q4 2022.

The art committee will review responses and select up to three finalists to submit proposals. Finalists will be compensated $1,000 to present a concept description, budget, and simple model and/or preliminary schematics. Selection criteria include quality of past work of similar scale and context, demonstrated ability to research and develop community-reflective art, design and project management skills, ability to work with architects and diverse project teams, and ability to meet project timeline and budget. Submissions must include a letter of interest (1,000 characters or less), digital work samples (minimum 10, maximum 20 images), resumes, and contact information for three references. All submissions must be made by 10:59 p.m. PDT on July 17, 2020 using the online platform; paper submissions will not be considered.
