About This Call

The City of Frisco Public Art Program is issuing a Request for Qualifications for a public art opportunity. The City seeks qualifications from artists for the Fire Station #3 public art project, with a budget of $19,000.00 (all-inclusive, covering artist fees, fabrication costs, transportation, insurance, engineering services, permit fees, site prep, installation, and related expenses).

Fire Station #3, located near the intersection of Legacy Drive and Warren Parkway, is currently being renovated and will be reoccupied by the end of September 2017. The City of Frisco Fire Department seeks an artist to design a new sign that is a highly visible and engaging wayfinding tool, clearly marking the location as a fire station. The sign must feature 'Frisco Fire Station 3' in red lettering, similar to other City of Frisco fire stations, and should incorporate themes and imagery related to firefighters and firefighting such as the Maltese cross. A 2.5 foot-high grass-covered mound under the current sign will be removed so the new sign is in the line of sight for passing motorists; this removal cost must be covered by the project budget. The current sign structure can be incorporated into the design but is not required. Proposals requiring electricity will be considered, but the design must also function without it; electricity supply costs must be covered by the project budget.

The public artwork should be freestanding and outdoor, suitable to be viewed from cars on Warren Parkway. It should be welcoming to visitors, safe and hazard-free, made of low-maintenance, durable materials resistant to vandalism, and installed according to the projected timeline without significant delay. This opportunity is open to all artists. Qualifications must be submitted online by 4:00 p.m. CST, Thursday, August 3, 2017. Applications must include a completed submission cover page, typed cover letter, artist resume (no longer than three pages), artist statement, three references with contact information, and no more than 15 images of past work (with the first five being most relevant to this project). The Artist Selection Committee will evaluate qualifications based on demonstrated excellence of past work, quality of professional qualifications and relevant experience, stated interest and approach specific to this project, and ability to create work meeting the project goals. Finalists may be requested to develop proposals or be interviewed.
