About This Call

The City of Norfolk is seeking an artist to create a public artwork for a new Fire Rescue Station #11, located on Lafayette Boulevard in Fairmount Park. The station will serve 11 different neighborhoods and is designed as a modern, sustainable facility. The artwork will be installed in a plaza area on the northwest corner of the building site.

The committee seeks inspiring, engaging, forward-thinking art that makes a strong statement and tells the story of a safe, resilient neighborhood. The artwork should stimulate thought, demonstrate creativity, and appeal to a younger generation. It must be large enough to be visible to vehicular traffic and enjoyed by pedestrians during day and night. The site has electricity available. Artwork must be made of durable, permanent materials that are safe, easily maintained, and will withstand time.

The total budget for the completed, delivered, and installed artwork is $125,000, covering artist's honorarium, engineering, fabrication, installation, materials, shipping, insurance, travel expenses, project plaque, final documentation, and incidental expenses. The selected artist must hire a Virginia licensed contractor for installation and carry Commercial General Liability Insurance naming the City of Norfolk as an additional insured. A city contract will be issued with a design phase requiring review and approval by the Norfolk Arts Commission prior to fabrication. Up to three finalists may be selected for virtual interviews with the Art Planning Committee. The selection deadline is November 27, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MST, with selection announced Winter 2022 and completion targeted for Spring 2024. Submissions must include a letter of interest (500-word max), resume (maximum 2 pages), up to 10 artwork images, and three professional references.
