About This Call

The Federal Boulevard Public Art Project seeks artists to create a public art installation along Federal Boulevard in Denver, Colorado, near the intersection of Federal Boulevard and US 6 (6th Ave). The area is historically home to mixed commercial and residential development, bordering the culturally diverse neighborhoods of Barnum, Valverde, Villa Park, and Sun Valley, with immigrant communities from Asia, Mexico, and eastern Africa. The area has the highest number of children in Denver and is one of the poorest in Colorado.

The selection panel seeks unique, one-of-a-kind artwork appropriate for Federal Boulevard that speaks to the international and diverse nature of the area. The artwork should have verticality to act as a "beacon" or "gateway" into the neighborhood, be colorful and attractive, and demonstrate experience with integrating artwork into the built environment. Artists working in all media are eligible. Lighting, whether integral to the design or for nighttime visibility, is required and should be included in the budget. All artwork must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials to withstand weather, physical stresses, and potential vandalism.

The budget for this commission is approximately $250,000 USD, funded through the City of Denver's One Percent for Art Ordinance. This amount is inclusive of all costs including design fees, consultation, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and prevailing wage requirements. Applicants must submit six digital images of previously completed work, a résumé (1-2 pages), and a statement of interest (maximum 2,000 characters) via the CaFÉ™ system at www.callforentry.org. Up to five semifinalists will be selected for interviews and will receive an honorarium to prepare and present proposals in person. The project is open to all U.S. artists, including emerging public artists. Teams may apply; submit one résumé with 1-2 pages per team member. There is no application fee.
