About This Call
Family Matters: 2018 SDA Annual International Exhibition In Print is an annual exhibition that showcases contemporary artists and designers working with or inspired by fiber art and textile-based materials, methods, and techniques. Selected work will be featured in the winter 2018 issue of Surface Design Journal, which is read by artists, gallery owners, curators, scholars, and enthusiasts nationally and internationally.
This year's theme, Family Matters, invites artists to submit work that engages the idea of 'family'—whether through inherited objects or rituals, family heirlooms, family events, techniques passed down through generations, or explorations of domesticity and home. The call is open to all artists working with fibers or textile-based media, including nontraditional materials and techniques. Eligible work includes traditional 2D and 3D forms as well as digital art, time-based arts, performance art, conceptual art, land art, installation art, book arts, paper, basketry, textile design, wearables, fashion design, interior design, product design, and craft-as-social-practice. Works must have been completed on or after January 1, 2015, and work executed under classroom or educational supervision is not eligible.
Artists may submit up to 3 images. Entry fee is $20 for SDA members and $45 for non-members. Selected artists will receive one complimentary print copy of Surface Design Journal. Journal Editor Elizabeth Kozlowski and co-juror Danielle Krysa (The Jealous Curator) will select work for inclusion in a comprehensive print and digital edition. Award honorees will be featured with expanded coverage in the December publication. If selected, artists must be able to provide print quality images at 300 dpi, 6x8" minimum, jpg or Tiff. Artist notification of acceptance is September 24, 2018, with selected artists submitting images and text for publication by October 8, 2018.
