Facing the Wall

Facing the Wall is a juried exhibition exploring how artists confront the walls in their lives. Walls have delineated nations and cities throughout human history, defining what is inside as separate from what is outside. We are now in an era of new walls—walls built on the borders of nations, ideologies, cultural and personal identities. Whether attempting to break through, climb over, dig under, circumvent, use as a canvas, or decorate, artists respond to the walls that confront them. This exhibition will display work that calls attention to the ways people confront the walls in their lives.

Eligibility: Any artist 18 years or older may participate. All 2D and 3D media are eligible; video entries will not be accepted. Artwork previously exhibited with ALRI is not permitted. All work must be original and exhibition-ready to install with appropriate hardware. Maximum size is 36" wide and 40" high including frame. 3D work must have an overall footprint of 24" x 24" or less with a weight limit of 35 lbs. Installation pieces must include a detailed description of any electrical, lighting, or space requirements. Artists may submit up to 3 images for a $25 entry fee.

The exhibition runs March 9 - May 26, 2018 at The VETs Gallery in Providence. Accepted work must be delivered in person (March 5-6) or shipped to arrive by March 4. A reception and awards ceremony will be held March 29, 2018 from 5:30-8pm. Juror: Julia Samuels of Overpass Projects. Awards: 1st Prize $300, 2nd Prize $200, 3rd Prize $100. Notification of acceptance will be sent by February 27 via email. Work pickup is May 29-30. Sales are encouraged; ALRI takes a 30% commission from members and 40% from non-members.
