About This Call
The Downtown Long Beach Alliance (DLBA) is seeking design submissions from Long Beach artists and graphic designers for the creation of sidewalk decals to be strategically placed throughout Downtown Long Beach. The purpose of the sidewalk decals is to encourage on-foot exploration of Downtown's unique neighborhoods, eclectic businesses and unexplored gems within its 1.38 square miles.
The Explore DTLB! Sidewalk Decal project is intended to foster pedestrian connectivity through whimsical and clever decals placed on Downtown sidewalks. Approximately 40 decals will be installed throughout four areas: Pine Avenue/The Promenade, East Village, Waterfront, and West Gateway (approximately 10 decals per area). The design concept should provoke curiosity and foster exploration through a scavenger hunt-like experience, be simple in design for visibility and interpretation by pedestrians, demonstrate artistic excellence, and be an original design. Decals will be installed in July 2018 and removed in January 2019.
Designs should be eye-catching and scaled for sidewalk viewing from above and at a distance. Decals should be designed for between 500 and 1,300 square inches (roughly 22 to 36 inches in diameter) and must be suitable for digital printing on vinyl or similar material. An honorarium of $250 will be paid to the selected artist/designer. More than one artist/designer may be selected, and selected artist(s) will have the opportunity to enter into a contract with DLBA to prepare final artwork for production of the sidewalk decal series. Artists will be selected through a juried process by design professionals, Downtown stakeholders, and DLBA and City staff. Eligibility is open to graphic designers and artists 18 years of age or older who reside within the City of Long Beach, have an established business or work in Long Beach, or attend school in Long Beach. Submissions must include a design narrative (500 word maximum), current resume, and up to four images conveying the design concept. Artist/Designer selection notification will occur the week of June 5, 2018.
