About This Call

The City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art program seeks to commission an experiential installation for the connector between new concourses at Kansas City International Airport. The installation should utilize light, sound, or fixed elements to be experienced by passengers traveling along the connector between concourses. The extents of installation are to be proposed by the artist. The installation should maintain views to the airfield, with no attachments to the glass curtain wall permitted. The installation should not obstruct passenger circulation and should not be floor-mounted.

The connector is glazed on both sides to allow views of the airfield and features terrazzo flooring and acoustic ceiling tile. At the center is a historical display detailing the history of the airport site and aviation in Kansas City. Moving walkways on each side transport passengers between concourses. Two-thirds of departing and arriving flights will pass through the B Concourse via the connector.

Eligibility: Professional visual artists or artist teams at least 18 years of age are eligible. Artists located outside the United States are requested to use a U.S.-based fabricator. Demonstrated experience working with diverse community stakeholders is desired. Full-time, permanent City of Kansas City, Missouri employees, project consultants, project contractors, and their employees and sub-contractors are ineligible to apply.

Submission materials due by February 13, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MST include: Letter of Intent (up to 1 page), Resume/CV, portfolio images/video/audio (up to 10 images and up to 10 each audio and video files, with minimum 1 and maximum 20 total samples), and an image list with details of portfolio work. Budget for this commission is up to $350,000 (all inclusive), covering stipends, design fees, travel, fabrication, supplies, material costs, delivery, engineering approval, lighting materials, and installation. Shortlisted artists will be notified by mid-March 2021.
