EXCITE--An Exhibit of Contemporary Textiles & Fiber Art

EXCITE is an exhibition celebrating American Craft Week 2014 that recognizes the Appalachian region's tradition and continuing leadership in weaving and contemporary textile art education. The exhibition runs October 9 – December 6, 2014, at Mary Cornwell Gallery, Haywood Community College Creative Arts Building, Clyde, NC, with an opening reception on October 9, 2014, 4-7 pm. The juror is Rachel Meginnes, Resident Artist, Penland School of Crafts.

The exhibition theme focuses on contemporary fiber work inspired or reflective of the design ideals set forth by Anni Albers at Black Mountain College, where she formed and taught the weaving program from 1933-1949. Work must include at least one material or resource obtained within a 100-mile radius of the artwork's origination, such as fiber or yarn sourced from a local farm, spun by a local mill, dyed with local materials, or created by another local artisan. Acceptable work includes decorative wall or sculptural fiber art and functional home textiles such as table linens, towels, blankets, and curtains. Garments and fashion accessories are not suitable entries.

Eligibility is open to student, amateur, and professional textile and fiber artists throughout the United States. Work must have been completed after December 1, 2013, and must be available for exhibit October 6 – December 9, 2014. The entry deadline is August 26, 2014. The entry fee is $40 and includes two entries (one image each) to be judged independently and 2014 Local Cloth Inc. membership dues. Paid members of Local Cloth Inc. may request a discount code reducing the entry fee to $15 for two entries. Entries will be juried from images submitted through CaFÉ. Entrants will be notified of acceptance the week of September 12, 2014. Accepted work must be received between September 30, 2014, and October 6, 2014. Entries may be for sale, with a 20% commission paid to Local Cloth Inc. for any sales resulting from the exhibition. Insurance will be provided by HCC while entries and exhibited work are on campus; insurance during transit is the responsibility of the artist.
