About This Call

The City of Alexandria's Public Art Program is commissioning a gateway artwork for Ewald Park, a 3.88-acre neighborhood park located at 4452 Duke Street in the West End of Alexandria. The park serves the surrounding community, including the Wakefield Tarleton, Brookville Seminary, and Foxchase neighborhoods, and features a playground, basketball court, open field, and parking lot.

Ewald Park has been approved for renovations including playground renovation and relocation, Parkour fitness equipment, and access improvements. The park renovation goals are to be a safe place for children to explore, create social connections, and serve as a hub of community activities. Two primary public art opportunities have been identified—a gateway feature to improve visibility from Duke Street and a ground mural on the basketball court. This call is specifically for the gateway artwork; the ground mural will be commissioned separately. Both projects will embrace the diverse community and celebrate the park as a hub of activity.

The selected artist or artist team will collaborate with the project team—including Public Art Program managers, the Public Art Task Force, the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, residents, and stakeholders—to develop a design that integrates with the park renovation plans. The artist is expected to attend public meetings and oversee fabrication and installation upon final concept approval. Project budget, inclusive of design, fabrication, and installation, may not exceed $150,000. Applicants may submit up to 2 applications and must provide 6-8 images as work samples. Entry deadline is February 26, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
