About This Call

'Ewa Mahiko District Park Gymnasium, built in 2013, is a multi-purpose indoor facility located on Renton Road in 'Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawaiʻi. The gymnasium covers approximately 10,000 square feet and features a full-sized basketball court. This is a public art commission through the Art in City Buildings program, which sets aside one percent of construction appropriations for artwork acquisition.

The Commission on Culture and the Arts seeks a two-dimensional artwork for the interior mauka side of the gymnasium wall. The artwork must be wall-mounted and made of durable materials, with placement, designs, and color schemes that do not interfere with recreational activities. The project should engage the community in its creation and reflect the surrounding area of 'Ewa Mahiko District Park, paying homage to the rich historical and cultural context including the O'ahu Railway and Land Company Railroad System, Kapapapuhi Shoreline Park, 'Ewa Honouliuli Internment Camp, and 'Ewa Sugar Mill.

The budget for the artwork project is $100,000.00, all-inclusive, covering artist's fees, travel, fabrication, installation, documentation, signage, taxes, and insurance. Applicants must demonstrate artistic excellence, evidence of working in public art, awareness of the gymnasium's recreational function, and knowledge of O'ahu, Hawaiʻi. Three finalists will be selected and may be invited to present proposals to the Commission on Culture and the Arts; all finalists receive a $400.00 honorarium. Final selection will be made in May 2024. Applications must be submitted through CallforEntry.org by April 15, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Artists must be registered with the City and County of Honolulu's Vendor Self Service System and compliant with the State of Hawaiʻi Compliance Express system prior to award.
