About This Call
Essence: The Characteristics That Define Us is an exhibition at the Athenaeum Gallery exploring how artists capture a person's essence through visual work. The characteristics that define us can be physical such as red hair or calloused hands, or intangible such as a generous heart or sharp wit. Interpretations of the theme might range from traditional portraiture to abstract and conceptual works. The gallery is looking for works that represent the gamut of qualities that define our understanding of particular individuals (both singly or in groups), including behavioral characteristics and inner emotional life.
Career artists, emerging artists, and people who do not consider themselves an artist at all are encouraged to enter. If the work successfully conveys the essence of a person, it will be considered. Final works will be selected based on aesthetic excellence and mastery of a medium, strength of character conveyed in the work, and unique and creative approaches. A final round of submission review will be done with an eye to creating a representative well-balanced collection of works from applicants.
All visual media is welcome including painting, drawing, wall hanging sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, and more. Work must be available from July 1 to August 10. Every work must be wall-mounted and wired for hanging with picture hooks. Works that rely on screws, cleats, and other hanging mechanisms must be approved by Gallery Director Twig Murray prior to delivery. Work must be less than 9 inches deep and lighter than 20 pounds. Works that require electricity will not be accepted. Entry fee is $40. Artists who live or work in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia are eligible to submit. Submit 1-5 images. Entry deadline is June 1, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
