About This Call

The National MS Society, Alabama-Mississippi Chapter is commissioning a public art installation to honor Legacy of Leadership recipients Neal and Anne Berte, past Birmingham-Southern College President and his wife. The work will be permanently installed on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College within an outdoor green space designed to accommodate spontaneous or planned small gatherings for conversation, study, and teaching. Several potential site options are available for the artist to choose from. The work should be inspired by the theme of Servant Leadership, with creative license encouraged.

The project fee is up to $60,000, which includes materials, supervision, cost of shipping, and installation. Selection of the artist is targeted for on or before March 31, 2015, with installation desired to be completed by Fall 2015. The selected artist bears responsibility for installation and must deliver or ship their work and assist in its installation, including providing a proposed plan with engineering specifications and other significant factors affecting permanent outdoor exhibition.

Applications must include: a one-page letter of interest describing your approach to public art, connection to the Servant Leadership theme, why your medium suits the project, and how your work is priced; 5-20 digital images of completed work from the past 10-15 years; a resume no more than two pages listing projects from the past 10-15 years; and names, titles, and phone numbers for three professional references. Selection will be based on quality, appropriateness, and originality of past work; durability and maintenance considerations; past performance and ability to complete work on time; and ability to work with contractors, consultants, and design team members. Public art suitable for an outdoor experience and setting is desired.
