Emulate, Recreate, Translate: SDA's 2025 International Exhibition in Print

Emulate, Recreate, Translate is the tenth annual International Exhibition in Print celebrating fiber's potential to emulate, recreate, and translate other qualities and contexts. The exhibition welcomes work that explores translation of language, metaphor, or concept in fiber; work that emulates qualities of other materials; work that illustrates fundamental aspects of fiber with thought-provoking reflections on other matter and material; and work that bridges cultural gaps. Artists working in all fiber and textile media, methods, or processes are encouraged to apply.

Selected work will be included in a comprehensive print and digital edition of the Fall 2025 Surface Design Journal, featuring full and detailed images, individual artist statements, and an essay by the jurors addressing the context of the work and its place within contemporary textile and fiber-based arts. Seven Award Winners will each receive an expanded 3-page spread in the Journal. Selected artists will receive one complimentary print copy of Surface Design Journal. The exhibition will be juried by artist Nirmal Raja and Surface Design Journal Managing Editor Lauren Sinner.

Eligibility: Open to all artists internationally. Work must have been completed since January 1, 2023. Artists may enter up to three artworks (2D, 3D, or documentation of time-based media, performance, or conceptual work). Work executed under classroom or educational supervision is not eligible. Entry fee: $30 for SDA members, $45 for non-members. Students can use coupon code STUDENT25 for $10 off respective entry fees. Submission deadline: May 18, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Selected artists must provide print quality images (300 dpi, 6 x 8 inches minimum) by July 17, 2025. Journal publication: Mid-October 2025.
