Emory Place Mural Project (Knoxville, TN)

Dogwood Arts is seeking prominent mural artists (age 18+) to create 10-15 new, large-scale permanent murals on multiple connected walls in a central location near the heart of downtown Knoxville, TN as part of the Art in Public Places Mural Program. At least 10 mural proposals will be selected from submitted applications, with more than $100,000 in stipends presented to participating artists. Walls range from 330-830 square feet, and individual artist stipends will range from $5,000 to $20,000 depending on artist profile, travel requirements, proposed design, and wall square footage.

Dogwood Arts and property owners will ensure walls are prepped, cleaned, and primed prior to work beginning. Equipment including scissor lifts, scaffolding, and ladders will be provided. Artists may request additional tools and materials, and a paint stipend may be provided based on wall dimensions and design. Each artist is responsible for their own transportation to/from Knoxville, though artists requiring lodging assistance can apply for that support.

The thematic prompt is DIVA. Artists should interpret their chosen diva—a person who commands attention, serves as inspiration, and symbolizes reverence—in literal, abstract, or surrealist manner. Application deadline is March 4, 2024. Selected artists will be confirmed by March 22, 2024, and must provide design proposals by April 12, 2024. Murals will be created July 1 - September 6, 2024, with a grand opening on October 4, 2024. Applicants must submit a 300-500 word written statement explaining their mural concept and 3-6 images of recent murals with reference contacts. This opportunity is open to all artists 18+ living in the United States. Entry fee: $20.
