About This Call

The City of Greenville, Pitt County Arts Council, Uptown Greenville, and North Carolina Arts Council are seeking qualifications from professional artists or artist teams to create a vision plan for the Emerald Loop, a new urban trail in downtown Greenville, NC. The selected artist will work closely with City of Greenville planners and their consultants to develop concepts for a series of art projects along the new urban trail and enhance the connection with surrounding neighborhoods and city districts.

The project goals are to activate and enhance cultural connectivity, economic vitality and walkability in downtown Greenville through engaging artwork and creative placemaking; add to Greenville's growing collection of public art; create community pride and celebrate Greenville's diverse community; beautify and add character to downtown; and create a vision that incorporates interactive and engaging elements of creative placemaking referencing the Emerald City. The Emerald Loop will connect Vidant Medical Center campus, East Carolina University campus, historic neighborhoods, the Tar River, Town Common Park, and the Greenville Uptown district.

The selected artist will receive $60,000, inclusive of research and engagement, preliminary reviews, public presentations, artist travel, and final documents. The project involves three phases: Phase I Community Engagement (8-10 days over two to three months researching the community and facilitating workshops); Phase II Feedback (developing findings report and recommendations); and Phase III Draft Plan (developing a draft Emerald Loop Vision Plan with example images, project descriptions, recommended budgets, locations, and an overall arts overlay). The final deliverable is a digital Emerald Loop Vision Plan document and Power Point summary.

Applications must be received by May 6, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Applicants must be age 18 or older and are eligible regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender, gender identification, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical ability. Submission materials include an artist statement of interest, three references with contact information, artist resume or bio, maximum 10 images of relevant works, and a suggested plan for community engagement activities. Up to three finalists will be invited to interview in Greenville and will receive a $1,500 stipend for interview and travel. The selected artist will be notified by June 5, 2019.
