About This Call
ELEMENTS is an exhibition open to all United States resident artists 18 and over. The theme invites artists to submit work based on one, some, or all of the 118 Elements of the Periodic Table. Interpretation of the theme is wide open—from alchemy to particle physics to wacky whimsy, including an Element's mystique, mythology, discovery, historical uses, use in art, philosophical or mystical flights of fancy, or whatever brings it to life for the artist. The United Nations has proclaimed 2019 to be the International Year of the Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements.
Each entry must be accompanied by a Theme Statement—a brief explanation of how the artwork relates to the theme. Theme Statements will be displayed on the wall next to invited artwork and must include the image title. The curators may reformat or shorten Theme Statements for consistency. Two-dimensional submissions include drawings, paintings, prints, photography, and mixed media. Three-dimensional submissions include sculpture. No film, audio, video, or performance art. Only original artwork is accepted; reproductions and giclee prints are not accepted (this does not apply to photographic or digital artwork). 2D artwork may not exceed 60" in height or width including frame, with a maximum weight of 25 pounds. 3D artwork may not exceed 48"x48"x48" and may not exceed 50 pounds. All framed artwork must be wired for hanging with flat devices such as D-Rings; protruding fasteners are prohibited. Plexiglas or other lightweight, break-resistant material must be used on all framed artwork 26" or greater (hand-delivered) or all framed artwork (shipped).
Entry fee: $45 for non-members, $40 for MSA members (1 to 3 entries). Deadline for entry: December 1, 2018, 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time. Artists will be notified by email of invited and not invited entries on December 10, 2018. Exhibition dates: January 10 to February 2, 2019. Reception: Friday, January 11, 2019, 5 to 8 p.m. Hand-delivery of invited work: January 7 and 8, 2019, noon to 4 p.m. PST at 1515 Third Street, San Rafael, CA 94901. Shipping deadline: January 5, 2019, 4 p.m. PST. Pick-up of hand-delivered work: February 3 and 4, 2019, noon to 4 p.m. PST. Shipped entries will be returned the week of February 4, 2019. Selection Jurors: Gail Morrison and Betsy Kellas. Prize Jurors: William Torphy and Christiane Stachl. Each prize juror will award one $500 prize and three non-monetary Honorable Mentions. After a sale, the Marin Society of Artists will reimburse the artist the sale price less 40% commission (30% for MSA members).
