About This Call
Elemental Forces is a public art exhibition inviting artists to create sculptures using renewable energy. Sculptures must harness a component of renewable energy utilizing solar, wind, water, geothermal, hydropower, magnetics, sound waves, or human power. Pieces will be sited on the 5-acre grounds of The Catherine Konner Sculpture Park in West Nyack, New York.
Sculptures must be aesthetically appropriate for public display with priority given to safety (no sharp edges, points, breakable components, climbing hazards, or barbed wire) and durability. Materials may include metal, wood, plastic, stone, ceramic, or other durable materials that can withstand regional temperatures ranging from 98°F to -20°F. Sculptures must be structurally secure for 10 months and height shall not create a balance hazard. Selected artists will receive a $300 honorarium to help defray costs of transportation, installation, and de-installation. Any costs exceeding $300 are the artist's responsibility. Artists are responsible for insurance during transporting, installing, and removing artwork. Installation must occur by May 31, 2018, with removal by May 15, 2019. Artists may sell exhibiting artwork during the scheduled period, with RoCA retaining a 25% commission on sales.
Eligibility is limited to artists residing within the United States. Entry fee is $25 (non-refundable). Submissions should include 1-6 images of existing work or proposed sketches with representative past artwork, resume, and a cover sheet with name, project title, and a single paragraph of up to 300 words summarizing the project. Exhibition dates are June 6, 2018 to April 30, 2019, with opening reception on June 6, 2018 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Accepted artists will be notified by April 8, 2018. Work must be picked up within two weeks of the close of the exhibit.
