Edgar S. McFadden Honorary Sculpture

Edgar S. McFadden (1891–1956) was a scientist who made breakthroughs in wheat genetics in South Dakota and Texas. He was born on February 3, 1891, in the Coteau Hills near Webster, South Dakota. His contributions to wheat breeding were instrumental in the Green Revolution that addressed global food crises.

This competition seeks artists to design a public sculpture honoring McFadden's legacy. Artists must submit a typed letter of interest (not exceeding three pages) explaining their connection to the project and demonstrating artistic excellence, originality, and technical competence in public artwork design. A resume (not exceeding three pages) and 10-15 digital high-resolution images of previous work with annotated descriptions are required. Applicants must also provide references from three public art projects, including contact information.

The selected artist will collaborate with the jury and SDSU Facilities & Services to produce the final design. Artwork must not contain logos or advertising, be durable and suitable for outdoor conditions with a minimum 50-year lifespan, and receive final approval from SDSU Facilities & Services before installation. The competition budget is $75,000. Jury dates are February 15 – March 22, 2023. Eligibility is open to national applicants.
