About This Call
Eastern Wyoming College seeks a sculpture with an imposing presence to be installed in front of the new Career & Technical Education Center (CTEC) building. The sculpture will be one of the first things visitors, students, and staff see daily, as the building is sited next to the college's one-way entry. The selection committee welcomes artists to suggest appropriate sites based on the site plan, though the committee prefers placement in the plaza area to the front of the building. The committee is particularly interested in sculptures that respond to the landscape, history of the community, or purpose of the building, and is leaning strongly towards welded construction. The college is interested in artists willing to serve as artists in residence and potentially involve art and/or welding students in the artwork.
All styles, conceptual approaches, and mediums are encouraged, including kinetic approaches. Work may be existing or created for the site. Proposed artwork should enhance and complement the architectural elements and visually support the purpose of the CTEC building. All artwork must be durable, structurally sound, secure, site appropriate, and easy to maintain. If lighting is desired, it should be included in plans and budget. This is a regional call open to artists from North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, and Idaho.
Up to $50,000 is available for the project, including all design fees, materials costs, labor for fabrication and installation, identification label or plaque, and all necessary costs for planning, completion, delivery, and installation. A separate amount is available for maquette development and travel to site for presentation. Initial application materials are due October 30, 2015. The selection committee will review proposals in November 2015, and select artists will be asked to submit complete formal design presentations in December 2015. Presentations will take place in Torrington, Wyoming. A decision will be made by January 2016. A specific timeline for development, production, and installation will be established upon selection of the finalist.
