About This Call

Eastern Virginia Medical School is seeking an artist to create a public artwork for its campus in Norfolk, VA. The artwork will be located at the corner of Raleigh Avenue and Children's Lane in a large grass area and outdoor plaza at Lester Hall and the EVMS Brickell Library. This corner serves as an epicenter and gateway to the campus with good sight lines down both streets and is used for gathering and special events. Thousands visit the campus daily, and the artwork will be viewed by pedestrians, vehicular traffic, and students from inside nearby buildings.

The artwork should resonate with EVMS's brand as a modern, clean, collegial, and authoritative institution. Work should demonstrate creativity, innovation, and imagination while being fresh, forward-thinking, expansive, airy, clean, approachable, welcoming, clear, and purposeful. The artwork must make a bold statement at an appropriate scale for the site and be constructed of durable, permanent materials that are safe, easily maintained, and built to the highest level of sustainability. Artists may consider working with light to showcase the artwork at night.

The total budget for the completed, delivered, and installed artwork is $242,500, covering artist's honorarium, fabrication, materials, shipping, insurance, travel expenses, project plaque, final documentation, and incidental expenses. The selected artist must hire a Virginia licensed contractor for installation and carry Commercial General Liability Insurance naming the City of Norfolk and Eastern Virginia Medical School as additional insured. Finalists will be interviewed by the Public Art Planning Committee about past work and creative process. A city contract will be issued with a design phase requiring review and approval by the committee and Public Art Commission prior to fabrication. The selected artist may be asked to present an educational workshop or presentation to the community.

Submissions must include: Statement of Understanding, Letter of Interest (500-word maximum), Resume (maximum two pages per person), up to ten artwork images (up to two video files permitted), and three professional references with contact information. Open to all artists over 18 years old. No application fee.
