About This Call
Stapleton announces a public art opportunity at the Eastbridge Town Center with a commission of $310,000.
The Eastbridge Plaza is the heart of the Town Center and will act as a gathering space for visitors and shoppers. The focus of the public art project is a green lawn approximately 80' x 45', framed by decorative planting beds and ornamental trees and surrounded on three sides by seat walls. The Project Selection Committee is interested in three-dimensional artwork that will be a dramatic centerpiece for this space and generate or emphasize a sense of place in this new area of the Stapleton community. The artist may consider options of multiple pieces that engage more of the plaza than just the lawn area. The artwork should serve as a visual icon that will attract people to this central place, be inviting to the community and visitors throughout the year, engage the viewer, stimulate interaction and encourage people to linger. The artwork should not be of such massive scale as to obstruct buildings and signage or interfere with visual lines of sight within the Town Center. Water may be incorporated in the artwork in a minimal way but the Committee is not seeking a fountain.
Sustainability is a major goal of development at Stapleton. Artwork must be sustainable, able to withstand the intense sun, snow, wind and temperature extremes characteristic of the Denver area, designed and fabricated to be durable, and require minimal or infrequent maintenance and low cost maintenance. Recycled materials are encouraged if appropriate but not required. The budget for this project is $310,000 and covers all costs including artist fees, travel, materials, fabrication, installation and documentation.
Applications must include a current resume, eight digital images of relevant work with accompanying image annotation listing media, size, title, date and brief description, and an artist's statement not to exceed 250 words addressing the artist's aesthetic concerns and how they would be integrated into this site. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, April 24, 2008 by midnight Mountain Daylight Time. The Project Selection Committee will review applications on May 1, 2008 and select three finalists who will be invited to Stapleton for a site visit in early June. Finalists will receive design fees and travel stipends for two visits. Finalist interviews will occur on July 29, 2008, with anticipated notification of finalist(s) by September 1, 2008. Applicants must be residing legally in the United States.
