Earthen

Earthen is an interactive juried exhibition about the material of clay, form, and culture. The exhibition explores multiple cultural and creative practices with clay, examining how ceramic practice shapes 3D design conceptually and perception of the world. Artists are invited to submit 2 or 3 innovative artworks of original design that push understanding of experimental art and design with clay, whether explored from aesthetic, material, conceptual, environmental, scientific, philosophical, or poetic perspectives.

Accepted sculpture must be made mostly of ceramics but can include additional materials such as wood, metals, glass, recycled/readymade combinations, textiles, installation, industrial arts, interdisciplinary practice, or mechanical technologies such as robotics and video. Artwork will be judged on strong craft, innovative design, thoughtfulness, and pertinence to contemporary dialogue about 3D conceptual design with clay. Artworks created within the last three years are preferred.

Submit 3-5 images as JPEG or JPG files (1,200 pixels or greater on longest side, under 5 MB, sRGB color profile) or Vimeo files no longer than 2 minutes. Entry fee is $35 for up to two images or 2 video files; a third image is an additional $5 media fee. Submissions open January 27, 2025, and close May 1, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Notifications will be emailed May 3rd. The exhibition runs May 29-July 31, 2025, at Mad River Valley Arts gallery in Waitsfield, Vermont. Prizes: 1st place $225, 2nd/3rd place $200. All artists in contemporary art fields including ceramics, textiles, industrial arts, design, multimedia, sculpture, or installation are eligible; must be over 18 years old.
