About This Call
The Sustainability Commission of the City of Palm Springs invites both amateur and professional photographers to submit images for a juried show entitled "Earth Through a Lens," part of the City's celebration of the 40th annual Earth Day. The show aims to underscore the need to improve stewardship of the earth to create a sustainable environment by exhibiting up to 30 large format photographs focusing on: (a) the natural beauty of the earth, (b) degradation of the environment by mankind's activity, and (c) attempts at restoration of the environment.
Photographers may submit up to 3 images. The entry fee is $35 for the initial image, with an additional $10 fee for each additional image. Photographs must be relevant to one of the following themes: (1) the natural environment (desert, water, mountains), or (2) human impact on the planet (consumption, destruction or degradation, restoration or renewal). A two-stage jury will evaluate both relevance to the theme of sustainability and artistic merit. The jury includes Douglas Fogelson (Distinguished Photographer, Chicago, IL), Katherine Hough (Chief Curator for the Palm Springs Art Museum), Richard Lui (Staff Photographer for the Desert Sun newspaper), and Mona Miri (Distinguished Photographer, San Francisco, CA).
Top entries will be displayed in storefronts along Palm Canyon Drive during April 2010. Top prize winners will be announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2010, and will receive prizes of $1,500, $1,000, and $500 plus a travel stipend to attend the awards ceremony in Palm Springs. Top photographs will be published in a catalog and in Palm Springs Life magazine. Eligibility: Both professional and amateur photographers living within the United States are eligible. Entrants must be at least 18 years of age.
