About This Call

Dynamic: Shadow and Light is a photography exhibition themed around shadow and light. The call seeks a range of interpretations by contemporary photographers of how shadows and light function in images. Photography is the recording of patterns of darkness and light; shadows enhance relationships of subjects, give definition and dimension, and complement light values. Photographers have used dramatic shadows and patterns in black and white images and explored ethereal and moody shadows and textures in color photography.

The juror is Todd Johnson, founder and director of Black Box Gallery, who holds an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has served as a portfolio reviewer for Photolucida, Critical Mass, Dodho Magazine, and Blue Sky Gallery, and has worked as an independent curator for exhibitions at multiple institutions. Johnson has exhibited his photographic work nationally and regionally.

Entry deadline is February 11, 2022. Exhibition dates are March 1-20, 2022. Twenty-four photographs will be selected for exhibition at the gallery, and an additional 30 photographs will be selected for exhibition in the online gallery annex. All 54 photographs will be included in a catalog available for purchase on Blurb Books. Entry fee is $40.00. Photographers may submit 1-5 images. Black Box Gallery provides free printing, matting, and framing for all exhibitions using an Epson Stylus Pro archival inkjet printer on Epson Premium Luster Photo paper. Selected photographers must provide high-resolution TIFF or JPEG files. Exhibition prints will be kept in a flat file after the show for future sale and promotion. Black Box Gallery takes a 50% commission on all sales; 50% goes to the photographer. Artists may request that prints not be for sale and be used for exhibition and promotion only. All rights remain with the photographer. The call is open to all photographers internationally.
