DVAC Biennial Call for Exhibition Proposals

The Dayton Visual Arts Center is accepting proposals for exhibitions to fill the 2017-2019 exhibition seasons. The center will schedule four to six exhibitions during each of the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons, including if possible one large solo show each year by a member artist. Additionally, two to four exhibitions will be scheduled for the annual REACH Across Dayton collaboration with Sinclair Community College during winter/early spring 2018 and 2019. REACH (Realizing Ethnic Awareness and Cultural Heritage) Across Dayton exhibits explore synergies between diverse cultures as expressed in the arts and humanities, with additional activities including a studies conference and workshops.

The Dayton Visual Arts Center is committed to presenting contemporary visual arts of the highest caliber, showing a wide range of styles and media, representing diverse viewpoints and cultural backgrounds, and encouraging interaction between artists and the general public. Although the center is member-based, non-members are encouraged to apply. There is no geographic limit as to who may exhibit in the gallery. The gallery is approximately 1,800 square feet with up to 200 feet of running wall space, including three moveable walls. The ceiling is 16 feet high with 50 feet of wall space at that height; remaining walls are 10 feet high. Natural light enters through storefront windows with west exposure. Exhibitions generally run between four and seven weeks.

A three-person jury will review images; their recommendations go to the programs and exhibitions committee, who then consider full proposals. A schedule for two seasons is approved by the Board of Trustees. The Dayton Visual Arts Center budgets for basic installation, an opening reception, and direct mail publications. Any additional expenses will not be covered unless approved in advance by the Board of Trustees. The center insures work during exhibition but not during transit. The gallery commission is 40 percent. Selected proposals receive a modest stipend, an illustrated color brochure with a critical essay, digital documentation, and an opportunity for the exhibition to travel to additional venues throughout Ohio. The application fee is $30; this fee is waived for the first application from any current member. Work sample requirements: 6-12 images, 0-3 audio files, 0-2 video files.
