About This Call
The Durham Arts Council (DAC) is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) local arts agency committed to supporting local and regional arts organizations and artists working in all media. DAC manages the historic Durham Arts Council building in downtown Durham, North Carolina, which contains 4 galleries, 2 theaters, rehearsal studios, classrooms, and meeting spaces. The building serves 350,000+ visitors annually.
This call is for solo exhibitions only. Applicants must submit an artist statement explaining the body of work and thoughts on an appropriate interactive activity to engage viewers, a resume including arts-related background, 10 images formatted according to CaFE guidelines, and an image identification list with image number, year executed, title, dimensions, and medium. Only 2-dimensional works that can be hung on gallery walls will be considered. The entry fee is $15.00. Ninety percent (90%) of exhibited work must be for sale. DAC will handle artwork sales and takes a 30% commission on sold works.
Exhibits are held in three locations: Allenton Gallery (main floor, approximately 42 running feet of hanging space, 11-foot ceilings), Semans Gallery (second floor, approximately 78 running feet of hanging space, 11-foot ceilings), or Durham Convention Center Pre-Function Corridor (296' long, 18' wide, 14' ceilings, appropriate for large 2-D work up to 6' x 6' or larger). Exhibits in Allenton and Semans Galleries generally run no longer than 8 weeks; Convention Center exhibits run for several months. DAC holds a reception for each exhibit and will ask exhibiting artists to assist with conceiving and, if appropriate, leading an interactive activity during the reception. Exhibiting artists will be asked to submit an artist statement and short narratives for each piece to accompany the exhibit. For special exhibit proposals (group shows, themed shows, or shows by associations), a separate Proposal for Special Exhibits application is available at http://www.durhamarts.org/exhibits_chosen.html with the same submission deadline. Mail completed applications with images and check to: Durham Arts Council, Attn: Susan Tierney, 120 Morris Street, Durham, NC 27701.
