About This Call
The Durham Arts Council (DAC) is a private, non-profit organization committed to supporting local and regional arts organizations and artists working in all media. DAC manages the historic Durham Arts Council building in downtown Durham, North Carolina, which contains 4 galleries, 2 theaters, rehearsal studios, classrooms, and meeting spaces. The building serves 350,000+ visitors annually.
This call is for solo exhibitions only. Exhibiting artists will be asked to submit an artist statement, resume, 7 images formatted according to CaFE guidelines, and an image identification list. The artist statement should explain the body of work and include thoughts on an appropriate interactive activity to engage viewers. Ninety percent (90%) of exhibited work must be for sale. DAC will handle artwork sales and takes a 30% commission on sold works. Artists will be asked to assist with conceiving and, if appropriate, leading an interactive activity during the exhibition reception.
Exhibitions are held in three spaces: Allenton Gallery (main floor, approximately 42 running feet of hanging space), Semans Gallery (second floor, approximately 78 running feet of hanging space), or Durham Convention Center Pre-Function Corridor (296' long, 18' wide, appropriate for large 2-D work up to 6' x 6'). Exhibits in the galleries generally run no longer than 8 weeks, while Convention Center exhibits run for several months. Entry fee is $15.00. Applicants must mail completed applications with images and payment to: Durham Arts Council, Attn: Margaret DeMott, 120 Morris Street, Durham, NC 27701. For group shows or theme-based exhibitions, a separate Proposal for Special Exhibits application is available at the DAC website.
