Downtown Spokane Mural Projects: Request for Proposals

Spokane Arts seeks proposals from Spokane-area artists or artist teams for mural projects in downtown railroad underpasses at Wall, Howard, Maple, and Browne locations. Priority will be given to artists with roots in the Inland Northwest. The program aims to develop mural projects that encourage progressive attitudes toward visual communication in public spaces, foster community ownership and interactivity, and beautify the underpasses.

Artist stipends are $1500 per mural site for Wall and Howard locations (both sides) and $1750 per site for Maple (both sides) and Browne location (west wall only). Additional materials, equipment, insurance, site preparation, and permitting costs are covered by the organization. Mural execution is scheduled to begin in June 2014 and be completed by August 2014. Selected artists will receive support including paint, brushes, drop-cloths, scaffolding, and other necessary tools, as well as city obstruction permits, liability insurance, and site preparation.

A selection panel will review proposals based on demonstrated ability and qualifications, technical and conceptual quality, and appropriateness of content to site. Finalists will be interviewed, and selected artists will develop site-specific renderings and work with Spokane Arts to establish timelines and material requests. Submissions must include a letter of interest, resume/CV, detailed proposal with community engagement philosophy (maximum one page), and up to 10 image samples of proposed and past work.
