About This Call

The City of Auburn invites sculptors to submit proposals for the Downtown Sculpture Gallery, a public art exhibition showcasing ten sculptures throughout Auburn's historic downtown. Selected works will be on loan to the City for twelve months (August 2015 – August 2016) and can be available for sale during that time. Each artist will receive a $1,000 stipend. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the selection committee may purchase one or more works for inclusion in the City of Auburn's permanent collection, with a budget of $10,000 set aside for this purpose. A popular vote "people's choice" award of $500 will also be given.

Artwork may be in any media and must be durable, suitable for outdoors, and able to withstand the elements as well as interaction with pedestrians and the general public. Works may be functional or non-functional. Existing sculptures as well as artwork proposals are accepted; proposals can be submitted as sketches with examples of other work demonstrating artistry, proficiency, and finish quality. Artwork specifications vary by pedestal location: seven pedestals on the sidewalk require artwork not exceeding 5,000 lbs, with maximum width of 3'8" from base to 7' height and 5' max width from 7' to 12' height. One pedestal is adjacent to the sidewalk and allows 12" additional width. One pedestal is within a raised planter box (20' length x 5' height x 18" pedestal). One pedestal is a 4'x4' concrete pad for direct installation. Smaller scale sculptures are accepted if the artist provides a pedestal to bring the work to viewing level.

Eligibility is open to professional artists or artist teams living or working in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, and Montana). Applicants may submit up to three sculptures for consideration. Artists are responsible for transportation, installation, and deinstallation of artwork. The City will provide insurance during display, signage, website featuring, promotional materials, an opening reception, walking tour, and a video featuring the artists. The City maintains first right of refusal for any potential private sales. Applications must be submitted by April 20, 2015, and must include artist statement, current resume (two-page limit), up to 6 digital images of sculptures being submitted, statement of availability, and description/illustration of attachment method to base.
