About This Call

The City of Napa seeks a lead artist or team of artists to design and install a temporary mural on a prominent, high-traffic location at First and Main Street in downtown Napa. This call is open to California residents of all backgrounds and cultures. The City of Napa particularly encourages artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and other marginalized groups to apply.

The mural should be a one-of-a-kind work of art with no specific theme, aligned with the City's Public Art Master Plan. The project aims to create an exciting public environment, preserve and enrich Napa's cultural environment, enhance the character of the city through community-valued artwork, and stimulate the downtown economy through increased pedestrian activity. The mural must be two-dimensional, installed to withstand weather conditions with an anti-graffiti application, and is subject to removal by the City or property owner at any time. The project area consists of a plywood fence with three of four sides available to paint. Artists have flexibility in using the entire wall or a percentage of it, but all three sides must have imagery and/or designs created by the commissioned artist(s).

The budget is a not-to-exceed figure of $10,000. The artist is responsible for providing all materials, including anti-graffiti coating. Applicants must submit a letter of interest, 10-15 images of previous work and proposed artwork, an image list with descriptions (up to 5 sentences each), a resume outlining experience and qualifications, and a proposed project budget including all artist fees, site preparation, travel expenses, materials, and installation. Artwork is ineligible if it contains copyright, logos, brand or business names, addresses, or phone numbers; is plagiarized or copied; or is obscene, political, or harmful in nature.
