About This Call
The City of Fremont, California is seeking a large scale sculpture for a temporary installation at the gateway location to Downtown Fremont, at the intersection of Capitol Avenue and Fremont Boulevard. The artwork will be displayed for two years from May 2019 through May 2021. The City is looking for a piece that anchors this main intersection and has a commanding presence.
The temporary installation theme is "Community: Sharing Energy and Collaborating." The City seeks a sculpture that speaks to community and how sharing energy between people and collaborating can bring forth change and creation. The artwork should convey the feeling of a community gathering together to share energy and collaborate. Artists must provide a short written statement (up to 150 words) explaining how their sculpture addresses and illustrates the theme. The sculpture must be designed and fabricated for long-term outdoor durability and ease of maintenance to withstand strong wind, rain, and excessive sunshine.
Eligibility is open to professional artists residing in California age 18 and older. All submissions must be previously completed artworks. The artist will be provided a quarterly stipend of $625 for the duration of the two-year exhibition period, totaling $5,000 paid in quarterly installments. The artist is responsible for transportation, installation, and removal of the artwork, with assistance provided by the City. Submissions must include four digital images (front, back, scale reference with adult, and superimposed on site), artwork description and dimensions, artist bio/resume, installation and removal plan, statement regarding the Public Art Agreement, statement regarding willingness to sell the artwork after the exhibition period with proposed purchase price, and list of locations where the piece has been previously displayed. Selection will be evaluated by the City of Fremont's Art Review Board based on artistic quality, responsiveness to theme, site compatibility, visibility, viewer's perspective, public safety, durability, and maintenance.
