About This Call

The City of Fremont, California is seeking one sculpture to display for two years from March 2017 through March 2019 at its gateway location to Downtown Fremont. As part of the Downtown Community Plan, an Art fund was established to provide funding for public art installations in the Downtown. This temporary installation opportunity focuses on "metamorphosis" as its theme.

The artwork must be a large-scale sculpture with a maximum height of 25 feet, suggested to be no smaller than 6-8 feet tall. It must be designed and fabricated for long-term outdoor durability and ease of maintenance to withstand strong wind, rain, and excessive sunshine. The sculpture will be placed at the intersection of Fremont Boulevard and Capitol Avenue, a main gateway into Downtown Fremont. The selected piece will be prominently featured on the City's social media channels and highlighted in print media and the City's newsletter.

The artist will receive a total of $5,000 paid in quarterly installments of $625 throughout the two-year exhibition period. The artist is responsible for transportation, installation, and de-installation of the artwork, with assistance provided by the City. Submissions must be previously completed artworks and are open to professional artists residing or working in California, age 18 and older. Submissions must include three digital images (front, back, and with scale reference), a written statement (up to 150 words) explaining how the sculpture addresses the theme of metamorphosis, an installation and de-installation plan, artist bio/resume, and a list of locations where the piece has been displayed if applicable. Selection will be made by the City of Fremont's Art Review Board based on artistic quality, responsiveness to theme, site compatibility, visibility, public safety, durability, and maintenance.
