About This Call
The Brighton Cultural Arts Commission is requesting proposals in an open competition for an artist to create outdoor art in Downtown Brighton, Colorado. The artwork should be a kinetic, interactive free-form monumental sculpture with elements using wind, movement, light, and/or sound. The scale should be large enough to be viewed from Highway 85 or by pedestrians walking along 1st Avenue and Strong Street. The City of Brighton and the Brighton Cultural Arts Commission would like to place the artwork in the area of old Brighton or the core Downtown Area, preferably family-related and potentially encompassing more than one corner of the delineated area.
The medium is limited to highly durable materials in a three-dimensional format, able to withstand adverse weather conditions, touching, and possible climbing. It must be low maintenance, not interfere with pedestrian traffic patterns, and not create a hazard to vehicular traffic. The budget available for this commission does not exceed $120,000, which includes design, fabrication, transport, delivery, installation, liability insurance, workers compensation insurance, necessary travel, and the artist's fee. The artist will enter into a contract with the Brighton Cultural Arts Commission and the City of Brighton, which includes a payment plan for the anticipated project schedule.
Submissions are due by December 15, 2015. The Selection Committee will choose no more than three finalists who will be asked to prepare detailed proposals, illustration boards (15x20), or maquettes and present live to the selection committee. Tentative presentation dates are between December 15, 2015 and February 1, 2016. Finalists will be compensated $600 for these works. Final selection is February 16, 2016, with installation scheduled for December 1, 2016. Applications are evaluated on artist qualifications and past work, appropriateness of the proposal to the project, probability of successful completion, artistic excellence, suitability of design to the site, and considerations of materials, construction, durability, maintenance, public access, and safety.
